[upbeat music] You're listening to Denver Wine Radio It's a DJ and a winemaker yakking about music and wine Presented by Botaquist Wine Company And now here's Cha and Paulie. Lamisico, [laughs] Paulie Vinson.
0:16
[laughs] What's up, Cha? Nothing, man. I, I get this beat under my feet and, man, I just wanna get up and I go all Sheeny Easton on you and shi- and stuff. And stuff. Star- star- starry [laughs] and stuff.
0:28
[laughs] It's such a great, great old-school beat, Paulie. It is. So I'm still cracking up because- Why? [laughs] Right before we came on and you said, "What are we tasting today, Paulie?"
0:42
[laughs] And I went, "Are we gonna drink sodas today, or juice, or what? What, what's all this?" And I said, "No, we're drinking wine in a can."
0:51
This is crazy because it lo- they literally, the, the, the branding and the, uh, it, it, it just looks like a can of something that would make you feel good, and I guess it does. Yep. This is, uh- Wow. What is this?
1:03
It's the big trend, you know? It's, it, it's been growing and growing and, and, uh, wine in a can is a thing. Like a sparkly wine kinda thing? Well, there are some that are sparkly, um, you know, lightly bubbly. Wow.
1:15
But all these are, these are all still wines. Wow. And, um- Who woulda thunk- [laughs] Yeah... we would ever come to flipping the top on some wine? [laughs] 'Cause that's what it is. Yeah.
1:26
And you know what's really funny about canned wine is, um, there, there's some decent wines in can, and then there's some wines which you'd expect, kinda, you know, fruity, uh, sweeter- Mm-hmm...
1:38
just, um, I, I don't really care for. What you would kind of expect. What you'd kind of expect. Yeah. But there are, but like I said, good wines in a can.
1:44
And then also there's, there's this new trend towards, um, like wine cocktails in a can. Hmm. Which, uh, translates to you and me- Yeah... 'cause we're old enough, wine coolers. [laughs] No, get the...
1:56
[laughs] That's right. It's just repackaged- It's just repackaged... and rebranded and- That's exactly what it is... hey, Millennials weren't even alive when- Nope... when we were- Wine coolers...
2:05
we were drinking those, uh- Ex- explain that to them, Paulie... Matilda Bay. Oh. [laughs] Stop it. Oh. And California Coolers. Oh, remember all those? Yeah. Oh my God. So that's basically kinda like sorta?
2:18
Well, no, there, there's a, there's some of that out in cans too. Oh, okay, okay. There's a string of that out in cans. Okay. Okay? So, uh- Wow... they put anything, you know?
2:25
Now- nowadays you mix anything, throw it all together, and package it, however you can g- uh, get it into people's hands. So, um, some of this is, is just regular wine mixed with maybe different juices- No...
2:36
different flav- The- No? Just grapes. No, these are all wines. All- Oh, they're all wines... yeah, these are all, all wines, grape wines. Right on.
2:42
I've, I've brought a mix- I just went in, uh, I went into Mali's, you know? Mali's. [laughs] Jumped into Mali's today. That's where you always buy your stuff- Always... is at Mali's. Mali's is the best place.
2:51
It's a good one. They had a big cans section. Uh-huh.
2:54
And they have, actually there was even more cans than, uh, normal, but, um, uh, than I've, than I've seen previously, so I think they're, they're bumping up, 'cause like this is a new one they brought in- Mm-hmm...
3:03
called, uh, Essentially Geared Wine Company. Okay. It's a red wine from California. And then, uh, course Underwood is from Oregon, and they're probably the leader. I, I...
3:14
They have the best, in my opinion, I've tasted, uh, uh, some before, and they're, they just have some of the best wine- Okay... in a can. I love their packaging. Then I bought Tangent.
3:22
Oh, that's a great pack- Yeah, that's a cool one too... look at the packaging on this. This looks so cool. Oh, yeah. That's why. They wanna make it cool for all the kids. And then I got three from Colorado.
3:31
[laughs] For all the kids. [laughs] Yeah, that's Logan. Like our producer back there. Our producer, yeah. [laughs] This is called Canterra's. This is from a winery in Palisade called Colterra's. Oh, okay. Okay?
3:44
But they, in the can they call it Canterra's. So I got three. I got their white, their rosé, and their red. Beautiful. Beautiful. We're gonna find out what the deal is on that. Look at that.
3:52
And, uh, and then I've got Seven Daughters. This is, um, this is a pinot noir from Italy. Okay. And that packaging right there, uh, it's very cool. It looks very '70s Mod Squad. Yeah, this one, it does.
4:04
[laughs] Okay, now I'm really telling everybody how- You're intrigued... how fricking old I am and I'm collecting a government check. Um- And then I got a little cute one. What's that?
4:13
This is, uh, the- Oh, that looks totally Oregon. Yeah, The Great Oregon Wine Company. [laughs] See? There it is. That's, that's Boulder on the, [laughs] on that side of the coast. And look, oh, mira que cute.
4:23
[laughs] One can equals one glass of wine. Oh, how cute is that? It's like the little, uh, can of Cokes. Yeah. The little sodas. It's, oh yeah, this is like the little- Right? Aw... it's a, it's a 187-milliliter.
4:34
I don't know what's in those little cans, but, uh, seven ounces. Yeah. Aw, that's cute. Yeah, this is, uh... Yeah, about pretty close. This is like six ounces. Ah.
4:40
That's a, I'm gonna meet his mom for the first time, I'll chug it in the parking lot. Look, you could just glug, glug, glug, glug. Oh, yeah. [laughs] You're done. [laughs] You could probably get that on an airplane.
4:50
[laughs] Exactly. Yeah, right? Hey, there you go. Yeah. Let's, let's drink some canned wine. Yeah, let's do it. So- So, uh, no opener needed today because- I know. [can opening] [laughs] And it- Did I, did I get it?
5:05
Yeah. Oh, that was loud and clear. All right. And it ain't a Coors Light. [laughs] So, uh, we're- Wow, nice color. Nice color. Yeah. So we're, we're opening first, we're doing the, uh, Canterra's Colorado white wine.
5:18
So this is actually, uh, it's Grand, it's listed as Grand Valley. Okay. Which is our, uh, one of our two AVAs here in Colorado, and that's, uh, over in Palisade.
5:27
So Colterra's Winery is, uh, a winery in, uh, in Palisade, and they've started canning wine. And, uh, we're gonna find out, um, what this is all about.
5:36
So, like we did put it in a glass, uh, for those of you tasting at home. Um- This is really good... taking a sniff. We don't really know. It's probably a white wine blend of, uh, sorts. Really good.
5:49
I, I would've never known that this, that you popped the top on this. Yeah, it's really fruity. It is very fruity. Really citrusy. Light. Very light. Yeah, light, li- some light tropical aromas coming through.
6:02
Just a little tiny bit of oak Little tiny bit. It's very good It's a good one. We're serving this at room temperature. These never, uh, went to a fridge or nothing. Right off the shelf, into my car,
6:16
30 minutes down the highway, and here we are. And here we are. Yep. So, um- Very tasty. Wow, yeah, real, real fresh, real, you know, just real clean, not... It's a dry white. It's a good, good canned wine. So- Mm-hmm...
6:28
and, uh, because it is in a can, I'm gonna drink it out of the can just to make sure, because, you know- You- These are meant to take camping and wherever- Okay, okay...
6:38
to the sup- you know, to the- The campfire's going. [laughs] I'm roasting marsh- To the laundromat... a marshmallow. [laughs] Exactly, right. That's a better one, the laundromat. [laughs] Go ahead. So, okay.
6:48
Go ahead, Paulie, take a swig of it. Oh, yeah. It tastes good out of the, right out of the can. Right out of the can good? Yeah. [laughs] Right on. There we go.
6:57
Ding, ding, with the Colorado White Wine from [beep] CanTerris. I like that one. All right, so, um- I love that little cute little can over there. Yeah, and that, uh, can today- The Oregon Wine Company...
7:10
CanTerris came in, oh, three, $3.98, uh, for a 250-milliliter can. So that's, uh, the equivalent of a third of a bottle. Okay. And for how much? So, uh, for, uh, $3.98, four bucks. Come on.
7:23
So a $12 equivalent bottle of wine. Right. Okay, so right in there, really good. Very good. Colorado product. I'm loving that one. Yeah, that was really good. All right. That's more the size of a Pepsi can right there.
7:36
Yeah. Here we go. [can opening] Ooh. [laughs] I kinda like that. Glad you like it. Okay, this one is, uh, Tangent is the brand, Sauvignon Blanc.
7:45
Um, this is from California, Edm- uh, Edna Valley specifically, which is near San Luis Obispo. Oh, okay. Okay? Okay. So this would be, um- Wow... like a Central Coast California.
7:57
And, uh, what was really cool about, the reason why I picked this one up, not only because it said Edna Valley and also 2016, it's vintage dated, and it's got a vineyard on it, Paragon Vineyard. So I'm expecting,
8:09
I'm expecting a lot out of this. You know what? My first sniff, apples. Crisp apples. Oh. Oh, yeah, this, yeah. Right? Yeah, super crisp apples. And- Strawberries... and, uh- Oh, that just smells so good.
8:21
Oh, yeah, really fresh. Melon. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah, yeah. This is, this is on the beach watching the sunset kind of wine. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Wow, another, um, this is another good one.
8:33
Really good acidity, a lot of fruit. That is really good. Bone dry. This one actually come off drier than the ColTerris- It is. It is... or the CanTerris- Mm-hmm...
8:41
white, was, uh, probably has just a touch of residual sugar in it, but, uh, not enough to- Mm. Don't freak out about it. Really good. Both dry wines.
8:48
Yeah, you can tell this one, uh, has got my, uh- That just smells so- Yeah... fruity and good. I get a lot of lime, uh, [laughs] on- Hey, yeah, some lime, too... finishing with a lot of lime- Yeah... it seems to me.
8:56
Yeah. So. Wow, Tangent. Wow, I like that. So this one comes in a can, uh, yeah, like the, it's a 375-milliliter can, which is a half bottle. So this looks like a, a can of Pepsi. Okay. Um- You gonna take a swig?
9:09
Oh, yeah, I gotta drink out of the can- Yeah... don't I? You gotta take a swig. Okay. [laughs] There's Paulie sitting in the parking lot while his clothes dry. That's good. [laughs] I'd drink it out of the can. You see?
9:21
[laughs] Straight out of the can, why not? It's awesome. I'd drink it slow, but- Yeah... um- Absolutely. This is really a tasty wine. I really like this one a lot. Yeah, this one, okay, so Tangent comes in at $5- Oh...
9:32
and 98 cents, so six bucks. Oh. So same, we're in the same ballpark, like a, a $12 a bottle- Mm-hmm... equivalent. Six bucks a can. Well worth it. Well worth it. This is so good. Very, very tasty. Yum. Yum. It's great.
9:46
Yumtina, that's what we say, uh- Yumtina? Yumtina. You know- Italian? No, no. Uh, Siri. [laughs] Oh, she says it? No, it happened with [laughs] someone. [laughs] One time we had a, uh, family text going back and forth.
10:00
Right. And my brother-in-law David- Yeah. [laughs] Oh, I know David... he, uh, we, uh, said, you know, "Hey, come over for dinner. We're having something." And he sa- and he typed in, "Yum, yum."
10:09
And, and, uh, Siri turned it into Yumtina. Oh. [laughs] So now it's- What? [laughs] Now it's a thing. [laughs] And it's never going away. So are you sure you're not getting Siri drunk at your house?
10:21
[laughs] Taste this canned wine, Siri. Yeah, really. This is really, this is a great... Oh, my, this is really good. Hey- I really like this a lot. All right. Recommend it. Two, two cans out of... Oh.
10:32
Oh, you're the spiller this time. [laughs] You're the spiller. Oh, my God, Paulie gives me a hard time 'cause I'm always knocking over glasses and knocking over something. And look who just spilled the wine.
10:45
Dig that, Paulie. I'm a, I'm a dirty wine spiller. [laughs] You are. I can't even believe it. Well, we're gonna have to clean up this mess. We are. All right. They're gonna kick us out, Paulie. Come on now. We are.
10:55
And we're only two cans in to however many I brought. Eight. Okay, so we're gonna go to, um- Oh, I love the, the packaging on that can. Yeah, let's go right to the, uh, Underwood. This is a Pinot Noir, uh, from Oregon.
11:12
And, um, this is another large size can. Oh, sorry, I didn't hold it up to the- [laughs]... up to the microphone. I'm gonna get in trouble for saying it, but the Raiders would like that can. Yeah, it's silver and black.
11:26
[laughs] I don't know what they think about Oregon, uh- Yeah... but, uh, but anyway. Oh, this, this- So-... has a nice color. Yeah, this is Oregon Pinot Noir. Red wine in a can. Hey, let's see what it's all about. Mm.
11:37
Okay. Smells good. Yeah, it does. It smells, um- Very oaky to me. Very foresty. Yeah, this one does. There's, the oak, uh, initially hits me, too. Yeah. Yeah, lightly woody. It's- But not, yeah- Yeah... not in a bad way.
11:49
No. Kind of smells like Breckenridge. Uh, [laughs] little bit of Breckenridge in there. Foresty. See, you know what? [laughs] You told me at the beginning- For someone-... of this... that's right. I did.
12:00
I said, uh- [laughs]... "Whatever pops into your mind," and absolutely. Those are kind of adjectives that- It-... that make you a star- That's right... in the wine world. [grunts] But in the- All right... growler.
12:11
Yeah, so there's, uh, some of the fruit starting to pop through. Oh, that one is good too, Paul. That is really a good wine. Oh, yeah, this one, real easy drinker, light-bodied Pinot Noir. Little bit, uh, oaky.
12:26
La, you know, some fruit. Goes down really smooth. Very smooth. I mean, a very low tannin. Very low. Okay? Very, very low. Well, a- well, in fact, compared to the, uh, the two white wines- This is very tasty.
12:39
Very tasty... could almost call this flabby. [laughs] But- What? [laughs] Meaning low acid. Oh. [laughs] Really? Yeah. [laughs] Flabby. Okay. Oh, this is very good. Well, this is a good one.
12:50
And now I'm gonna do the, uh, can test- Yeah... right out of the can. Okay. Paulie's sitting in the car, washing, waiting for his laundry to dry. Hmm. Yeah. No, yeah, the... You know what?
13:00
A little more of the fruit hits me when I drink it out of the can. What? How can that be? Give me a zi- swig. [laughs] Dude, do we look like we're behind the gym or what? I was gonna say.
13:11
[laughs] Do we look like we're behind a high school gym? [laughs] We're crazy. Hang on. [laughs] See, you're making me choke. Hey, but, you know, look at it this way, Cha.
13:20
It's 3:39 in the Mile High City, and, uh, normally we're just taste- you know, we'd be at noontime, but not, you know, that's officially wine time- Right. It is... at 3:00. Yeah. I tasted oranges. Did you? Yeah, I get...
13:31
You know what now? See, that is weird. There is. See, uh, the power of suggestion. Definitely a little orange peel- Uh-huh... I'm tasting on the, on the, uh, finish.
13:39
So- Would this be good to mix, like with fruit and make a sangria? Oh, yeah. Why not? Because it's already, like, it has a fruity kinda base to it. It does, has a very fruity base, little bit of oak.
13:49
Yeah, throw in some fruit. Gotta let it soak, you know, and, uh, off you go. Do you let it s- uh, soak overnight or a few hours or what, what's your best- It's-... uh, recipe for sangria?
13:58
Uh, the best recipe is to come to the winery- Right... and get your growler, and I get it on the tap for you. Oh, that's right. Okay? That, that's right. Then it's ready to go. That's right. Okay.
14:04
Then you just have to squeeze an orange in it. But- Oh, okay... uh, sangria recipes, very simple to do. Uh, chop up any kind of fruit that you like. Okay. Throw it in with your wine. Okay.
14:14
And you need about, um, I don't know, two hours to really- Oh, so two, okay... a couple hours to really start to get that- Like minimum two hours... minimum two hours- Okay...
14:21
to start to get that real, that fruit flavor- Okay... that you want of the- Right... of the extra fruit. This is really good. This is a really, really good wine, Paul. Very good wine. I like it. Hey, do it now.
14:36
Getting funky in the Mile High City. Hey. Funky like a bull-legged monkey. [laughs] That's another tribute to our friend JoJo. [laughs] Fuck it. It's, it's Cha and Paulie- [laughs]... on, uh, on Denver Wine Radio.
14:54
How are ya? Hope you guys are- I'm, I'm real good. So anyway. Okay, what are we drinking, Paulie? Okay, we're going to, uh, back to the Colt Terrace, uh, Can Terrace- Mm-hmm... red wine. Mm-hmm.
15:03
The Colorado Grand Valley. Mm-hmm. That's, uh, our area over in Palisade. Mm-hmm. 2015, so it's a- Wow... red wi- red wine blend. Ooh, look how rich- Yeah... and dark- This a, this is a good one... that looks.
15:14
So, uh- Holy Toledo. Oh, actually, it tells you on the can. Yeah? This one, 46% Malbec, 26 Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah, 2% Merlot, and 2% Cab Franc. Well, there you go. Wow. You can't get any more grapey.
15:31
Oh, smell that. Let me give it a whiff. Wow, this smells really nice. That smells really nice. I mean, it's a real rich red wine. It's got that- Ah. It's g- it got some oak on it. Real deep fruit, like, uh- Dude...
15:43
blackberry. This is, yeah. Dark cherry. This is a nice dinner in Cherry Creek kinda wine. And look, it came out of a can. Mm. This is crazy, Paul. Wow. I know I'm- Yeah, don't let the can thing- Look, this-...
15:57
fool you, because these are some [laughs] really good wines. Let me tell you straight up, this blows that Underwood away. It does? Yes. This is really good. So once again- Oh, yeah...
16:08
uh, fruit, you know, fruit-forward style of wine. Little bit of oak. Mm. Mm-hmm. Low tannin. Mm-hmm. Although this ha- and the, but this one, uh, really good, uh, concentration in it. This isn't, this isn't- Oh, no...
16:18
like a throwaway wine. No, no, this is a really good wine. How much would this be, Paul? This would be, uh, $3.98- That's it?... per can. That's it? Yeah, 250, uh, milliliters, so like I said, a third of a bottle. Wow.
16:32
So this would be coming in, uh, at like a $12 bottle, and I'm gonna sip a little bit out of the can for you. This is really good. The, oh, what, let me have a swig. Nice. Was it- Oh, yeah... the same? Oh, yeah.
16:44
This is good. I'd drink it out of the can. Mm. Oh, yeah. [laughs] You mic bumper. [laughs] And then, um- Oh, that is really good... this one- That is really good...
16:54
uh, give it at least a little bit of a chill, not, you know, not- Yeah. Yeah, yeah, absolutely... just for my, for my personal- Right... my personal taste. I could see, yeah.
17:00
But this, this would take, because this doesn't have the, the real heavy tannins, this would take a little more chill, um- Mm-hmm... uh, on the cooler side than you normally would for a red wine. Mm-hmm.
17:08
You could pro- you could push this down to 55 degrees, I think, and it would still taste great. Ah. So. This with a great prime rib. Oh, yeah, this, this is good with anything. So- And a Caesar salad. Yeah.
17:19
Oh, I'm hungry. This is good with an Uncle Paulie. That's a, uh- What is it?... you know, that's our Italian sa- uh, sausage sandwich. Ah, the Uncle Paulie. At the winery, the Uncle Paulie. Yeah.
17:26
Oh, I love the Uncle Paulies. All right. Homemade Italian sausage. All right. And if we have time, we, I think we do. We do? Yeah, we're gonna taste another. Okay, so this was a n- one I hadn't seen before.
17:37
It's called Essentially Geared Wine Company. They got a nice red can. It's red wine, California. Pair with street tacos, grilled cheese, and tater tots. What? Yeah, right on the can, baby.
17:49
We love that, grilled cheese and tater tots. [claps] Well, that is a good- Ooh... a good pop. Okay. [laughs] Okay, forget the prime rib. Green, grilled cheese, and ta... Oh, look at the color of that.
18:02
Yeah, so this has a nice dark red, uh, color. Oh, very pretty. This doesn't tell us, I don't believe, on the can what, uh, what's in it, but, um, we just know it's- Mm... California red wine. And, uh, really good color.
18:13
Mm-hmm. Mm. Wow, and this does, this smells California. [laughs] So smells like there's some Zin in here right off the bat to me. It's good, but it's, it's grilled cheese and tater tots compared to this one.
18:26
[laughs] Wow. What do you think? This is a, this is pretty good. You think?
18:31
Yeah, it's very, it's, it's a, it's a freestyle wine, uh, which is, uh, what I expect in a can because this is something you're gonna take with you- Right... wherever you're going. And, um- It's drier.
18:43
Yeah, this one's drier. Um, but this is a deeper... Th- So this ha- this to me is, is a, has some kind of blend. It's like Zin, Syrah, maybe a little Petite Syrah in there.
18:53
Uh, just my guess, but, um, so but it's got really good flavor, like dark jammy, blackberry jam. That's blackberries. Yeah. That's exactly what I- So-... would I think...
19:02
but the key with all of these red wines have been low tannin, not- Mm-hmm... not a lot of oak tannin to it. So. Mm-hmm.
19:08
And again, do not let these cans fool you, that it's like wine out of a can, because seriously, it's, they're very, very good. Yeah, it's really good.
19:15
You poured these into a bottle and put a cork in it, and nobody would ever know. No, you wouldn't. These are, these are wines you'd definitely find. Yeah. You could find in a bottle just the same.
19:23
Yeah, you know, whatever. You go camping, you go sit out at Cherry Creek, at the beach at Cherry Creek, which I love to do sometimes. You know, you just put these in a cooler.
19:31
Just put them in a- You don't have to worry about bottles breaking, Polly. You don't have to worry about cork screw. [laughs] You don't have to worry about glasses. You just pop the top. You just pop the top, baby.
19:42
I'm looking for the alcohol content on this one, 'cause that's a good, go down real easy. 13.9%. Is that good? Um- Is that- Well, that, that's basically 14%. Okay. So you have to be careful, at least I do- Okay...
19:56
in a can. This, this goes- Oh, kind of drinking it fast... it, this goes down really fast. Right. And this is one of the larger cans, so this is the equivalent of a half a bottle of wine. Oh, yeah.
20:05
Okay, so I- You have to kind of be careful... I drink that at a, at a concert or something- Yeah... I'm good. Okay. Okay, I'm really good. Okay. [laughs] Okay. I'm good till tomorrow. [laughs] No.
20:14
It ain't like the old days. No. [laughs] But seriously, they, yeah, could, they come in a can, and, uh, just go to Mali's? Yeah, I got these at Mali's, and I'm sure you can get them anywhere.
20:23
Um, Colterres I know is, they're, they're distributed around the state. Mm-hmm. So, which is very good. That's what we want you to do, is reach out and grab some Colorado wine. That's right. So. In a can. In a can.
20:34
I mean, I, everybody's outdoorsy here. We all go camping and fishing and hiking and whatever, and this is perfect. Like I said, you don't have to worry about the bottle breaking.
20:42
You put this in a backpack and, and hike up Red Rocks. Have this as you watch the sunset. Heck yeah. Come on, now. All that's missing is your dog- [laughs]... and a grilled cheese sandwich. [laughs] Tater tots.
20:54
Tater tots. [laughs] Okay, so you know the drill this week. Your job is to go out, put some altitude in your glass, try some Colorado wine. This is Denver Wine Radio.
