Fire the tune, people. [upbeat music] [whistle blows] There you go. [upbeat music] Let's turn it up in the house. [whistle blows] You like that jam? Paul.
0:13
Hey, welcome everybody to Denver Wine Radio, live from Bonaquisti Wine Company. I'm Paul Bonaquisti. This is Cha Cha Chavez. Hey everybody. What's up? Hey, welcome.
0:23
Yeah, see, we got a little bit of a studio audience today. That's right. [laughs] This is our second, only our second live studio audience show. Yeah. Here's what we've done today.
0:31
We, we hooked up a microphone, so if there's questions from the studio audience, you have to come around, step up to the microphone and fire away. There is no question that will go unanswered here today. [laughs] None.
0:44
It's Colorado against the world. That's w- that's what we do here. We taste Colorado wine, compare it against the world. Right. Because Colorado makes great wine, a lot of people don't know about it.
0:53
They need to know how they taste side by side. And Colorado is going to be, I think, the next Napa. You think? I think. All right. I really do.
1:01
I think there's a we- we're getting an influx of, uh- [laughs] They call it the Napa of beers. [laughs] Well, be- we're pushing beer to the curb. [laughs] Okay? We're, we're pu- pushing beer to the curb. Yeah.
1:11
And, uh, I think Colorado's gonna become the next Napa, 'cause we're getting such an influx of different people from all over the country. Are you, are y'all from Denver? No? Where are you from?
1:20
I'm from Illinois, and we also have Canada over here. Right on. All right, Canada in the house. Yeah. So what are y'all doing in Denver? Oh, we live here. Oh, okay. [laughs] Oh, I see. How long have you been in Denver?
1:32
I've been here five years and... The Canadians? A long- A long time. Long time. Okay. So you're finding, uh, the Denver wine scene, enjoying a little, a bit of Bonaquisti wines today.
1:42
What do you, what do you have in your hand? What are you drinking? Uh, right now I've got a blend of, uh, Sangiovese- [laughs]... Cab Franc, and, uh, Touriga Nacional. Wow. Yeah. Wow. Very good.
1:53
And so, uh, g- you know, Ta- Do you need a part-time job? Yeah. [laughs] I can hang out with you guys. You know what I've learned? And this is why I'm doing the show with Paul, 'cause seriously, I don't drink at all.
2:05
Okay, Paul and I have known each other for a really long time. We worked Denver Radio. [laughs] I know. You're looking at me like- Can't see the confus-... what are you doing here, right?
2:10
I wish you could see the confused look. [laughs] I know.
2:13
But see, that's why we decided to do this show, is so that he could educate me on wine, and get me to the point where, you know, I could have a little wine with dinner or maybe with friends or whatever, and I've learned so much.
2:22
And what I've learned the most is there's no, uh, right answer. You just took a sip, so tell me what you taste. I taste fruit. Okay. Okay. It's fruity. Well, you're enjoying it.
2:32
You know, we won't make you talk anymore, but enjoy your wine and thanks for stopping by Bonaquisti Wines. [laughs] No worries. That's awesome. [laughs] I put him on the spot, didn't I, Paul? You did.
2:41
You really- [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Let's warm him up first and then we'll- Right. [laughs]... and then we'll get him into the, into the act, so. Another couple of glasses of wine. Yeah, so, um- Hey.
2:49
Hey, so anyway, uh, it's Father's Day weekend. I was trying to think of something fatherly to drink and, or a theme for the show, and I thought, well, hey, I picked a macho grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh, ooh.
3:00
So, you know, Cabernet is the, the king of grapes. And to be hip about it, it's a good Cab. Is that what they say? They, they say, yeah, that's what they say. "Oh, I really like Cab." You like Cab.
3:10
"I, I need a good Cab," so. [laughs] Right, okay. But hey, like, uh, dads, there's different styles of dads. Right. We've got different styles o- of Cabs. Right on.
3:20
So you've got some dads that are very structured and- Right... you've got some dads that are- [laughs]... you know, really, uh, I don't know. Laid back. Laid back. There you go.
3:30
[laughs] Some dads that just like to chill. Yeah. So we've got, we've got four Cabernets to try, one of them Colorado, of course. So we've got, we have one from France. Okay. Uh, we have one from, um, California. Okay.
3:43
Alexander Valley specifically. And then we have one from Argentina. Ooh. And I grabbed that s- because, uh, Argentina played Iceland in the World Cup this morning. Oh, yeah. So I thought, and they tied 1-1. They did?
3:53
They tied? Okay. Yeah, [laughs] so I thought salute to Argentina, so. I'm rooting for Spain. You know, that's, uh, kinda the country of my root. Also because Shakira's husband, oh, have you seen him?
4:04
Gerard, Gerard Pique- No, I haven't... something. Okay, if he was a Cab [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Muscular. Oh. Yeah. Yeah, we might have a muscular Cab here today. Yeah. Right on. Hey, but you know what?
4:15
I was gonna root for Italy until I, I looked them up and they didn't make the World Cup this year. [laughs] Oh, they didn't? No. Oh, bummer. All right, so- So what are we gonna try first? You know what?
4:22
Let's go right to the, uh, Chateau Beauregard. Okay. This is a French wine from- In the scale of machoness?... from Bordeaux. Okay.
4:30
And that's where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, all these Bordeaux grapes grow, and that's what, and they, they're traditionally blended in a certain percentage.
4:39
So, uh, this is specifically from Graves, an area on the left bank- Oh, okay... of the river- Okay... that goes through Bordeaux. [laughs] Okay, I thought graves. Yeah.
4:48
[laughs] I thought you meant did you pick [laughs] are these g- grapevines in, like, cemeteries? So they, they typically, everything is Cabernet Sauvignon based in the blend. Okay.
4:58
In fact, it's on the label for us, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cab Franc. Oh. Okay. But so it's got a lot of Cab. You know, Cabernet Sauvignon is different than Cabernet Franc, okay?
5:08
And would this, going along with Father's Day, big prime rib, something like that, or? Th- this one, I don't know. I've never had this one, so let's, let's give it a sniff and, and taste it and we'll find out.
5:17
But to me, um- Wow... you know- Earthy... uh, Bordeaux's are, yeah, they're gonna be more earthy. Oh. Uh, higher acid.
5:24
So just a different style of wine making and different style of grapes that, that come out of, uh, out of France. Oh, man. Oh, wow, yeah. So a real, yeah, it smells- Very earthy... very earthy.
5:36
There's some, there's some good fruit on the nose, like cherries and, um- Yeah, but it almost smells like, you know, like a farm after it rains, how kinda the dirt smells sometimes. [laughs] Yeah, exactly.
5:47
[laughs] That's a great- That's what it smells like... point, Cha. Oh my God, it's so smooth. I mean, no [swishes]. That is good. That's real good. Reserve wine That's real good. Wow, this one is really good. Mm-hmm.
6:03
Lots of big fruit up front, some easy, easy going tannins. Mm. A lot of that earthiness that you're talking about. Mm-hmm. Mushroom, uh- Yeah, truly, too... kind of olive brine to me- Yeah...
6:12
uh, finishing, but man, real crisp and clean. And man, this is good. Oh, I like this. This is not as, um... I mean, there's a, there's some French wines that could be really, you know, throw you off.
6:21
Like, "Eh, I don't like this stuff." But- Mm-hmm... um- No, this is very good. Oh, I love the way it smells. Yeah, so this, if this were a dad- Laid back... laid, laid back, like, um, farm guy. Yeah.
6:35
Well, and this one, uh- Oh, that smells, that smells so good... by the way- It's a new color... Chateau Beauregard, $13.99. What? Yeah. Shut up. Nice. For th- for that? Mm-hmm. Very, very good.
6:45
You get a packed house in here today, Paulie. Yeah. Yeah. And wine tasting. I mean- We brought the dads in... what, what are your wine tasting hours? Tasting hours? How- Oh, we're, um, we're 11:00 to 5:00 on Saturdays.
6:54
11:00 to 5:00 on Saturdays. Yeah. So stop on by, Buena Ques Do Wines. You know, uh, sample some great award-winning wines. If you're hungry, make you something to eat. All right. Next, we're gonna go to Colorado. Okay.
7:05
Okay, we're going, uh- Local... straight to Colorado. This is, uh, Two Rivers. Um, they're, they're in, uh, Grand Junction. Okay. Or Palisade. Okay. In that... Okay. And, um-
7:17
What's the percent- This is their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. Okay. And, um, let's give this one a whirl. Okay. Ooh, man, that is some dark rich colors right there coming out of that bottle. Yeah.
7:30
Man, that was Prince Purple right there, dude. Ooh, that smells good too. There's way more fruit to it, a bigger burst of fruit explosion. Yeah. Citrus. I smell, like, lemons, oranges. Do you really? Yeah. Yeah.
7:42
That's cool. I see how you could get that. It's more like baked cherry to me, like on this one, instead of like the other one was more sour cherries. Oh, yeah. This has a, a bigger, spicier type of profile to it, so. Mm.
7:58
Well- All right, so this one, um, more structured. That's why the tannins are hitting you- Mm-hmm, big time... more, more so. These were softer. Mm-hmm. Yeah. This one's more grippy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay? Yeah.
8:08
So I'm gonna have to give it another- This is the, uh, what's that cage fighting that they do? The W whatever. That's, that's what that is. That's the cage fight? Yeah. The, the, the- That's the cage-... cage match?
8:18
Yeah. That's the cage match. On, on the All Star Wrestling? Yeah, on the... Yeah. [laughs] That's it right there. Whoever drinks this is a cage fighter. [laughs] 'Cause this is on top of the macho.
8:25
This, this you, has a bite- Okay... afterwards. Yeah, so this one hits more... I don't know if you, uh, feel it compared to the other one. Oh, totally. This one hits more on the mid palate. Oh, yeah.
8:34
So that tannin structure, this is gonna be a great, um, steak wine. Like grilled. Oh, okay. Okay, so when you, when you grill meat and you char it- Oh... you, that char has a tannin to it. Yeah. Yeah.
8:46
And that, you need tannin to combat that tannin. Oh. So- Okay. Like when you, uh- They kind of cancel each other out, those, when you match up those pro- those flavors.
8:55
And then other fl- You'll get other, uh, flavor profiles out of the wine. Right on. Yeah. Yeah, but this definitely is, uh, talks back to you. [laughs] It does. Mm-hmm.
9:05
[laughs] When you- As, as compared to the first one. The first one was like, it's very tasty, but no talk back. Two Rivers Cabernet Sauvignon, uh, $25.99. Small production Colorado world. Mid-20s for a quality Cabernet.
9:21
It's pretty average. Yeah. Right on. There's some 20... You know, I saw some low 20s and, uh, overall from what we've all been tasting for the last, uh, few months, uh, we, we're right there. Okay. Mm.
9:30
So now let's move on to, uh, Argentina. This is the, uh, Alto Cedro Anos Cero. 100 years. Wow. Cabernet Sauvignon. So this is from Mendoza, big growing region of Argentina. And- Nice color...
9:46
this one's got another big, uh, yeah, big, deep purpley color. Wow. Look how beautiful that color is. What a way different, uh, profile [laughs] to th- This one is way barnyardy to me.
9:57
[imitates chicken clucking] [laughs] See, I don't smell that. You don't smell that? No. What barnyardy- What does it smell- What, like what? What does it smell like to you? What is it like barnyardy?
10:08
Like explain like barnyardy. That means a lot of stuff. Like- Okay. Like, um-... stinky barnyardy, or? Yeah, like- Like wood? This one smelled like...
10:15
So maybe that French one smelled like the, uh, the farm that was the vegetable farm. Oh. This one smells like the animal farm. Exactly. Okay? Let me see. Lots of pigs and chickens and- Oh, there you go. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
10:28
Yeah. This is pot roast farm. Lots of intense, uh- Oh. Good... blackberry. This has more deep, like the darker fruits to it. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. Blackberries, blueberries. Mm-hmm.
10:44
And it doesn't have much of a tannin coming back at you. Okay. Now this one- It's good... this is really good. Has a lot more oak tannin to it. Mm-hmm. Man, grill, grill it up. [laughs] Oh, man. Grilled veggies. Yep.
10:59
What are they? Charuscos? Grilled meats of course. And then- The gauchos and the charuscos? Is that what they're called? The- I think so, yeah... Argentinian- And you're gonna love this one. Yeah. Coming in at $16.98.
11:08
Oh, that is unbelievable. All right, how's that? Yeah. On a scale of machoism, what do you think? This one's pretty macho. [laughs] So this dude, you know. Yeah. It's really good. It's really full bodied. I just, mm.
11:22
Where that one was in the cage match, this one's the luchador. Ay. [laughs] This one comes out with a mask. Candele. That's right. [laughs] Yeah. Mm. Oh, that is some good wine right there, Paulie.
11:35
I'm glad you like that one. That one's really good. That's my fave so far. Okay, good. This is called Edge. Not the- Edge? Yeah, Edge. Okay. Ooh. Yeah, look at that one. Wow. Yeah, another- Look at that color...
11:45
another big inky, uh- Ooh... purple. This is, uh, Alexander Valley, California. So Alexander Valley's up north of Napa. Okay. They have some higher elevations up there.
11:54
But this one came highly recommended from the guy over at Molly's. Wow, so this, [laughs] this one's got, this one, it was, uh, violets. I mean, I was smelling, like, flowers along with the fruit.
12:07
Oh, that smells so good. Yeah, way more perfumey. Yeah, and then some dark, some of that dark berry jam type, uh, profile. Not bad. That's okay? Yeah. Not your favorite? I'm not a big fan of it, no.
12:20
[laughs] Yeah, this was, this is, uh, can you feel your teeth? [laughs] Exactly. I mean, this one, coach, this is a total- Yeah... uh, this is your, your super muscular, uh- Okay...
12:31
soccer player dude that you were just talking about. Yeah, this is, uh, Shakira's husband. Shakira's husband. [laughs] Yeah. That's right. No, uh-uh. I'm not feeling this one at all.
12:37
He's coming to get you and he's in your face. Yeah. And, um- Goal. [laughs] And you like [laughs] yeah. This, yeah, I- You like muscle... This is the muscular Cab. Yeah. [laughs] Okay. Okay?
12:46
I don't like this one at all, to be honest. And this one, we just opened these bottles, so this one is gonna open up. All of them will. They'll open up, throw off some more flavors. But man, structure- Oh...
12:55
all the way through, structured fruit, structured tannins. And, um- It's, uh, it, man, it comes at you. It comes at you. Wow. Seriously. That's a grippy one. It's- And you need, um, this one, right now it needs food.
13:11
Um- What? A couple of these you could drink as a beverage with a cup, you know, with a little snack. With a little appetizer, yeah. But man, this one- You, yeah, you need food... I need something to eat. Yeah.
13:18
It's pretty intense. It's real- Yeah. I, I like that one. I li- I actually, I've liked them all. There's a- Yeah... there's a, a s- a different dad for everyone there. [laughs] Exactly. So.
13:27
Okay, this would be my favorite one, the one from Argentina, Argentina. Okay. Followed by the first bottle we opened. The French, uh, yes. The French. The Chateau Beauregard. Okay. Followed by...
13:40
The Colorado, Two Rivers. Yeah, Two Rivers. Okay. And then- And then The Edge... man, uh, uh-uh. This one's in my face. I don't like it. Yeah. [laughs] It's too strong. It's too, like, it's, like, winey.
13:51
Like, really winey. It's strong. It's strong. So you're just, but you're on your, you're on your, uh- Yeah, I, I-... your maiden voyage... yeah, I c- no. You're still t- Yeah...
14:01
i- i- introdu- getting, getting introduced to a lot of different wines. And, uh, so yeah, you don't wanna go straight for that one. Oh, God, no. Maybe- I know...
14:07
maybe a little, like, a, as much as is in my glass right now with a, with a meal. And that one today, The Edge, came in at 19.98. See, all these for- On sale for, uh, three bucks off.
14:18
I mean, seriously, great prices for great bottles of wine. Yeah. And you picked these up at Mali's? I went to Mali's, yeah. So. We love Mali's. We do. And, um, [laughs]
14:28
so they, when I was checking out at Mali's and she said, "Hey, are you in our program, our loyalty program?" I said, "Yeah."
14:34
And then she, I said, I gave her the phone number and I was like, "I don't wanna see," 'cause then you'll then- Right... then I know how much I've spent there. [laughs] Right. And then of course I hit my $5 off.
14:43
So yeah, great Cabs for dads. Mm-hmm, Father's Day. And, uh, Father's Day coming up tomorrow. But, uh, you got any dad sayings?
14:50
Y- when we used to be, like, leaving the house or whatever and we'd say, "Be back at 11," or at night or whatever, and his thing instead of saying, "You better not," was, "You better don't." [laughs] Okay.
15:01
So to this day is, everything is, "You better don't." Yeah. You know, if you're thinking about it, you better don't. [laughs] You know? That's a good one. Yeah. What about yours?
15:09
What did the kid- what would the kids say about you? Um, [laughs] okay. [laughs] First let me tell you, I'll tell you about my dad. I grew up on a farm out in Brighton. Mm-hmm.
15:19
So we de- we al- we were always doing work growing up. My dad would say when we were out doing something and it, it started to look a little crazy, he'd say, "I ain't got time to take you to the hospital."
15:31
[laughs] So that was his way of saying be careful. Yeah. [laughs] But we were really busy- Right, right... so don't get hurt, so. Don't get hurt, right.
15:39
But we, um, hey, at the house though, the kids, I made up these rules, uh, a long time ago when they were little, and they still remember a, a bunch of these little rules. Uh, the first one was wash your hands. Right.
15:48
It ain't cost nothing, okay? [laughs] So I was always telling them to wash their hands. Rule two, so when they were little, they would jump in our bed. We used to say, "Don't steal my way," okay?
15:58
Instead of, "Get out of the way," "Don't steal my way." So the rule was steal Mom's way, not my way. Oh. [laughs] Okay? Okay. So, so they know that rule very well.
16:06
All right, well, that's, um, that's the Father's Day spectacular here with the Cabernets. At Bonacquisti Wines, uh, in Sunnyside. It's always sunny here. You know what to do this week.
16:16
You have to go out, uh, try some Colorado wine. There is Cabernet Sauvignon, by the way, that grows in Colorado. We didn't really- Mm-hmm... even touch about that.
16:24
Whitewater Hill is, is a, uh, a winery and a vineyard out in Palisade area. Oh, okay. And they grow, they grow Cab Sav. And I was always very fond of theirs. Uh, I used to make a Cab from their vineyard.
16:39
Um, and very structured. I, I've been buying Cabernet from, uh, Desert Moon Vineyards, which is another vineyard over in the same area. And th- that one is a little more, uh, fruity. Mm-hmm.
16:51
Put some altitude in your glass this week and, uh, reach out to us, denverwineradio.com. And next week come and watch us. Oh, yeah. Next Saturday- Be part of the-...
17:00
come, come be a part of the- Yeah, be part of the show... the studio audience here and, uh, taste some wine with us and, uh, ask some questions and, uh, have some fun. Yeah. Cheers.
