[upbeat music] Denver Wine Radio with Paul Bonacquisti and Cha Cha Chavez, presented by Bonacquisti Wine Company and Cha's Back in the Day Cafe. She dashed by me in painted on jeans.
0:18
Oh, yeah And all heads turned 'cause she was a grease. Billy Ocean, man, did he lay down the grooves back in the '80s. I could think of an eye- Wait... that would hold me. [laughs] Yeah.
0:33
Yeah, all the clubs I used to hang out in, Billy Ocean, that was like first out, you know, like right out of the...
0:38
When they had to play the slow song, and then, uh, they'd get the, everybody grooving again, it was Caribbean Queen. There we go. Yeah. I know. [laughs] Get down. So, hey, how's everybody doing?
0:50
I hope you're, uh, enjoying this great sunshine in the Mile High City. And, uh, we're tasting wine here on Denver Wine Radio.
0:59
Paul Bonacquisti with special guest in studio, Michelle Cleveland, winemaker at Creekside Cellars in Evergreen. She has the, uh, best Cab Franc in the world. Thank you, Paul. You're welcome. And, uh,
1:11
wine enthusiast backs me up on that. Hey, so, um, Cabernet Franc. Now, don't get it confused with Cabernet Sauvignon. It's not. It's not as tannic as Cab Sav.
1:20
It's, uh, it's usually nice and fruity, a little earthy, and, uh, it's just great. It's great, great wine, and, uh, you should go out and discover it, especially Colorado, if you haven't yet.
1:30
Um, a lot of the wineries in Colorado make Cabernet Franc- We do... 'cause it does so well here. Yeah, and you know why it does so well here? Why? I'm gonna give you some scientific information. Do it.
1:40
[laughs] All right. No, it does... Actually, it does well here because it goes through bud break late, so we don't have to worry about the spring freezes, okay? Right.
1:48
And it also ripens sooner than Cabernet Sauvignon, so we're able to, to develop all those rich, yummy, fruity flavors with the right acidity, and it actually can make a better wine here in Colorado than Cabernet Sauvignon because of all that.
2:02
Yeah. That's cool. Mm-hmm. So, um, um, so we've... We're gonna start off with, uh, this Santa Barbara, uh, County Cabernet Franc, and this is, uh, Lo-Fi is the, is the label, and, uh, Cha Cha's here.
2:21
[laughs] Hey, Cha Cha. Hey. Thanks for joining us. You're just in time for wine. [laughs] I know you can't wait. So, um, all right. So we're gonna take a sniff of this, uh, Cabernet Franc, uh, lo-hi- Lo-Fi. Lo-hi.
2:34
Lo-Fi Santa Barbara County. And, uh, Santa Barbara County is gonna be a cool climate right next to the ocean out in California. Right. And, uh, so a cool climate, I'm already thinking is...
2:44
I would expect a lighter style- Absolutely... of wine. And, uh, and even we looked on the label for the alcohol content. Uh- 12 and a half percent. Yep, 12 and a half percent. Mm-hmm. So, um,
2:55
so right away, what do you get? You getting some good, good sniffs over there? I'm getting k- some good sniffs.
2:59
It's, uh, it's a, it's a lighter style definitely, so more I would say old world style, meaning, um, not a lot... There's probably no oak on this, I would guess. The nice... It's got nice acidity, uh, lighter in color.
3:12
We've got some of those, um, bell pepper, uh, notes that you were talking about earlier, Paul. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, this one, I, and, uh, I just tasted it. Really light. Mm-hmm.
3:24
Yeah, little, little, i- i- to no oak, uh- Right... is my guess. I would say no oak. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Very, uh, very fruity. Uh, almost roseish, like a d- [laughs] like a- Real light... like a, real light.
3:35
Like a dark style rose. And, uh, it's got- Cherries. Cherry. There you go. Yep, cherries. Cherries. That was the first thing, cherries. Yep. Mm-hmm. Tons of cherries, raspberries, and, uh, man. It's very light.
3:44
Very- Very light... this would be something that I could start off with. Yeah. And- Definitely... you said the alcohol content is 12%, so- Mm-hmm... explain to me alcohol content, like three, two beer.
3:54
Like my friends say, "Why do you drink three, two beer non-alcoholic?" It's just... It- Yeah... there's no point. Right. So, um, so alcohol is driven by the sugar level in grapes. So when we- Okay...
4:06
when we harvest grapes, we measure the sugar, and that gives you a potential alcohol. So the riper the fruit, the higher the alcohol's gonna be. So what's the most you can go on alcohol content? Um- Can you... I mean,
4:20
you know, like- In a regular wine? I mean, it can- Yeah... I mean, there's some producers out in California and, uh, like Washington that are producing wines that have over 15% alcohol. Wow. And what's the average?
4:31
What's the normal, you would say? Oh, Paul, you and I, I think will agree, we like anywhere from 12 to 14%. Mm-hmm. That's, I like that. Yeah. I prefer that. I mean, I prefer that.
4:41
And that's because, uh- Because we like to drink more than one glass of wine, Cha Cha. Right. [laughs] And if we're gonna have a glass of wine that has over 15, it's not gonna be the pretty side.
4:49
So that's what I was g- I was gonna ask, is the, is it flavor? Is it because of flavor combined with great buzz? You know what? There's- At that level, at that alcohol, you know what I mean? Yeah. Like a good...
4:58
You know what I mean? I mean, when, when you get up into those high alcohol levels, you know what you're gonna taste is the alcohol. Oh, okay. And we wanna taste the fruit. We wanna taste- Right...
5:05
what's going on in the glass besides the alcohol. Right. And a lot of times that alcohol is gonna mask everything. Oh, okay. Mm-hmm. Interesting. Mm-hmm. I like this one, Paul. Yeah. Yeah, I do too. I think it's great.
5:16
Wow. I'm, I'm glad I picked it up. I think they did a good job. I do, Paul. [laughs] This is my year to learn how to drink. Yeah. And I'm gonna start with all these awesome wines. Excellent.
5:25
'Cause it's good for your health too. It... Red wine is so good for your health. Absolu- Right? Good for your heart. Absolutely. I just read- Your complexion... your complexion, I just read the other day.
5:33
It's good for your teeth and your gums. It is? Yes. Really? Absolutely. Now, do you wanna elaborate on that? Because [laughs] my mouth is a disaster area, so how is it good? [laughs] I mean, this could be good.
5:44
Give me a straw and a bottle, dude. [laughs] 'Cause I'm paying my dentist too much money. Yeah. So, yeah. And, and red wine- Wow... red wine's good for the health, you know?
5:52
So- Right, it's got a lot of, uh, health benefits for you. Mm-hmm. They got all that- And it, and it's been proven, I mean, since- Absolutely... you know.
5:59
I just read that this morning, yeah, coffee and wine- Um- And tea... gonna get you over 90. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, so. Absolutely. And it's been- I-... proven in countries. Look at, look at the, the, um,
6:11
Japan, China, you know? Yeah. Lots of tea drinkers. They live to be- Mm-hmm... you know what I mean? Mm-hmm. Look at Italians. Look at you, Paulie. I'm- You're gonna live to be 100, dude... I'm trying. Yes.
6:19
I don't know, I don't know that I wanna live over 90, though. I'm over halfway there. [laughs] Yeah, me too, man. I'm pushing up, I'm close to pushing up daisies, Paulie. Oh, whatever. [laughs] But that's all right.
6:36
Yeah, this is, this is... You know what? Awesome I gotta apologize, you guys, for being late. I'm so sorry. No problem. That's all right. I'm so sorry.
6:41
Paul's the, uh, Paul's the manager here, so he already informed me that we're gonna have a, a meeting after this. Well, that might be a- Special meeting... that might be a, uh- A program meeting...
6:48
that might be a write-up. That, I, I think that is a write-up. And I'm, I'm, you know, but I think you're past the verbal warning, because I heard you were late once already. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
6:55
Uh, uh, y- you know, I, I haven't been on the air for, like, three years now. It was three years and February 19th, but who's counting? But anyways, uh, Paulie, you and I used to work just down the block. Yeah, we did.
7:06
It u- it used to take me n- maybe 20 minutes, if that, from... 10 miles, 'cause I live 10 miles from here. Wow. So next week, I'm leaving one hour early, 'cause 45 minutes [laughs] doesn't seem to do it.
7:19
30, it's cr- the traffic- It's crazy... it's crazy It's crazy in Denver. But you know what? It's, it's a good thing, 'cause I was thinking about this as I was bitching along the way.
7:27
It, there's so many new people that have moved here, and I'm so glad that you, that we're doing this show, because- Right... you know? Right.
7:34
I mean, that's the audience right there, and, and we gotta turn 'em on to great Colorado wine. We've gotta do it. This is our chance.
7:41
I mean, a lot of them coming in from California, and they're used to all the California vineyards and, you know, whatnot. But man, Colorado is growing, and Colorado needs to, uh, you know- Yeah... get a name for wine.
7:52
Absolutely. Okay, I'm done. Okay. [laughs] By the way, that, uh, that last bottle of Lo-Fi Cab was, uh, came in at, like, $26, so, um- Did you think it was worth it, Paul? I di- I did. Okay. I, I thought it was nice.
8:07
Um, you know. Yeah, I think it's a good representation. It really is. Mm-hmm. And- Yeah... so, and then- That's, that's the second one... that's the second one. Yeah, don't dump, don't dump that one. Sorry.
8:16
[laughs] Don't dump that. Gonna say, don't dump that one, Paulie. All right, so we- This is our Chenon. Yeah. We've moved on to Chenon, and, um, La Grand Buc, uh, Buc, or Buck.
8:26
I'm not good on the French terms, but- Buc d'Huys How do you say it? Buc d'Huys. Oh, Buc d'Huys. Okay. That is the, um- Chateau Buc d'Huys [laughs] That's the- Yeah... yeah, that's the producer of this wine.
8:37
So, uh, so we're gonna get a whole different profile on this. Um... Oh, great. What? We have a caller? [laughs] We have a caller. Oh my God. I didn't know we were gonna get callers. [laughs] Who is it? Who is it, James?
8:49
Who is it? We got Rey Rey Mysterio from San Diego on the line. What? Dude. Well, right on, Rey Rey. Well, let's, let's- What's up, guys? How you guys doing, man? [laughs] Like your show. Like you guys' winery, man.
9:02

9:32
